Each Father’s Day brings back some cherished memories for me,  a bit of reflection and a look ahead.  My Dad has always been there, a very stable force in what has often been a capricious life.

To be fair, he and my Mom both made life quite easy for our family.  They both worked very hard and often sacrificed to ensure we four kids had what we needed and often more.  We weren’t exactly coddled, thankfully, but were guided and directed by two very dedicated parents.

Mom smilingUntil my Mom went to her final rest, Father’s Day was celebrated with my Mom’s birthday as the days were often near.  This year, Father’s Day falls right on her birthday.  The normal celebration was a family get together, often for a barbecue, followed by Mom’s favorite dessert–fresh strawberry shortcake with whipped cream.  The berries were often from a trip to another farm where we would pick until our baskets were all filled, then come home to process all of them while eating more than enough!  But Mom loved strawberries; we all did.

So Dad shared his special day with my Mom, a fitting design as they were always together, working together, parenting together, and relaxing together on those rare moments when farm and garage allowed.

I wrote a tribute to my Dad for his birthday– you can read it here.   I feel so blessed that I am able to spend time with him, sometimes reminiscing, often chatting about news and current events, sometimes just quietly reflecting.  He’s a great man and I am so thankful for our time together.

But since we always celebrated Mom’s birthday with Father’s Day, I’d like to invite you to read about my Mom, too.  It just seems fitting that the day is still about both celebrating Dad and celebrating Mom’s birthday.  You can read about her here.

Happy Father’s Day to all Dads today, especially my dear father and Happy Birthday to my Mom, now resting with the Lord.
