I love children’s books, especially those centering on the relationship between children and animals. The e-book, Moondust, by Neil Wilson is a boy and his pup book that I was happy to be able to review.
Overall, I liked Moondust and found it easy to read and easy to follow the plot. The characterization was very well thought out and descriptions were quite well done. The author took a great deal of time and pages in developing his characters, and while that does benefit the story, I think it could have been done much quicker with excellent results and then allow the story to develop and draw in the reader.
The setting was well crafted and I felt comfortable with the characters and the setting, until the point where the boys were captured. At that point, I felt like the author twinged just a bit on the antagonists, probably to keep the book a safe read for pre-teens. While I believe that is honorable, there are other ways that the would stay true to the characters while maintaining a safe read for pre-teens.
That aside, this was a very good book and I highly recommend it to its intended audience. The plot is well developed and the reader is left with a good feeling that Moondust and Ed will continue to share a good life.
Although the protagonists have learned that not all people are honorable, they also learn that sometimes a person struggling with family or other issues might not be what they seem. Responsibility is loosely woven into the story, as are honesty and family relationships.
It should be noted that this book is written and set in the UK, which might actually be a pleasant diversion for some pre-teens. I am looking forward to other books by this author and hope they also are set in the UK and have the child-animal bond within.
I recommend this book, but parents may need to encourage readers to continue reading through the first few chapters until Moondust enters.
